The lamina propria of the small intestine normally contains a mild chronic inflammatory infiltrate composed predominantly of mature lymphocytes and scattered plasma cells It may be seen, to a limited extent, in chronic duodenitis due to peptic disease, gluten sensitivity, autoimmune enteritis, or Crohn's disease.
