Helen , Mildred and Ms. Sullivan were lost in the interiors of woods surrounding "Fern Quarry". They tried finding path but failed in their numerous trials. At last, Mildred found a trestle and pointed towards it. it was already dark and they had to take the shortcut. They ventured on it and were walking on the track, until Mildred pointed out a train in distance. This shows that Mildred was always alert and observant of her surroundings. Her sensitivity is enhanced by how Ms Sullivan misses trestle as a way to home, and could not see the train coming. Mildred is not only a sensitive observant girl, but also intelligent as she cleverly avoids the accident by seeing the train and going down to to the cross braces, along with her sister.
