Given:

Mili bought few excercise books for Rs. 80 and 50 paise i.e., Rs. 8050

Her brother bought few more excercise books for Rs. 57 and 50 paise i.e., Rs. 57.50

To find:

(i) The maximum price of an exercise book

(ii) The total number of exercise book bought

Solution:

(i) Finding the maximum price of an exercise book:

The price of the exercise books given in both the cases are the cost price of the books which are Rs. 80.50 and Rs. 57.50

So, to find the maximum price of an exercise book we will find the H.C.F of the two cost prices given i.e., H.C.F. of 8050 and 5750 ...... (converted both the prices in terms of paise for easy calculations)

Factors of 8050 and 5750

8050 = 2 × 5 × 5 × 7 × 23

5750 = 2 × 5 × 5 × 5 × 23

∴ H.C.F. (8050 and 5750) = 2 × 5 × 5 × 23 = 1150

Since we get the H.C.F. as 1150 paise so by converting in terms of rupees, the maximum price will be Rs. 11.50.

Thus, \boxed{The \:maximum\: price\: of \:an\: exercise\: book\: is\: \bold{Rs.\: 11.50.}}

(ii) Finding the total no. of exercise books bought:

Now, we have the the price of 1 exercise book so, we will find the no. of exercise books bought by each of them:

No. of exercise books bought by Mili = \frac{80.50}{11.50} = 7

and

No. of exercise books bought by Mili's brother = \frac{57.50}{11.50} = 5

∴ Total no. of books bought = 7 + 5 = 12

Thus, \boxed{The\: total\: no.\: of\: exercise \:books\: bought\: are\: \bold{12}. }

Mili bought for = 80 Rs. 50 p = 8050 p

Her brother further brought for = 57 Rs. 50 p

= 5750 p

Maximum price = HCF of 8050 and 5750

Required HCF = 1150

1150 p = 11 Rs. 50 p

Total number of exercise book =

(8050 + 5750) ÷ 1150

= 13800 ÷ 1150

= 12

The maximum price of an exercise book is Rs. 11.50 and total number of exercise books is 12
