Minds are open only when hearts open
Phrase open mind signifies a mind that is enlightened, experienced, virtuous, sympathetic, caring, spiritual, and loving. The Bishop in the play had not only an open mind, but an open heart also. He followed Jesus Christ’s teachings of love, charity, benevolence, and forgiveness in true spirit. He helped his parishioners. Jesus laid stress on giving to the needy and the poor in his Gospel. So, when the Bishop sold salt-cellars to pay Mere Gringoire's rent, who was ill, he actually tried to follow one of the most important teachings of Jesus Christ. If the Bishop’s mind would not be so open and enlightened, he would perhaps never have kept the doors of his house unlocked.
He had kept the doors and windows of his open unbolted for the last 30 years lest any passerby should need some help. These unbolted doors and windows proved to be a turning point in the convict’s life. If the convict would find them locked, he would perhaps not enter the Bishop’s house, and perhaps would miss the opportunity of being reformed.
