Mineral fuels may be those hydrocarbon-containing natural fossil fuel resources which are not derived entirely from biological sources. They have high quantities of carbon. Generally, coal, petroleum, and natural gas are mineral fuels.

Mineral fuels are found in sedimentary rocks largely as these rocks form under very low temperature and pressure conditions. As the fossil sediments gets compressed into the rocks, with time and after gradual decay and dissolve of the fossil, the minerals finally seep deeply into them and finally changes the entire chemical make-up.

The types of rocks that contain oil and natural gas are all sedimentary rocks, rocks formed when grains and mineral particles deposited by running water fuse together. Because these rocks are cemented together from such small components, they are porous, full of spaces in which energy-rich carbon compounds can settle, later to be liberated in the form of either oil or gas.
