Daedalus wants his son Icarus and himself to take the risk because there was no other way they could escape from the labyrinth on the Crete Island where they had been imprisoned by King Minos. The plan was dangerous because it involved fixing a pair of wings with feathers attached using wax to their shoulders. The wax would melt if they flew very high close to the sun and they would fall down from a great height. This would result in their death instantly.
