Miss Tanu is a vegetable vendor who has been selling her goods at the same place for the
past 15 years. Prior to that her mother had occupied that place. She borrows money daily
from a money lender to buy two baskets of vegetables and has to pay interest of rupees
30 daily. She leaves her house at 5 am, and goes to wholesale market where she buys
vegetables and later sits for whole day from 7 a.m. onwards. She has to pay Rs 50 twice a
day to the police man as bribe. It appears that the police here collects bribe by shift, if a
vendor works for half a day. She has to pay Rs. 50 as bribe. Since Tanu sits for the whole
day she has to pay twice.
In case she does not pay, the policeman can beat her up and throw her vegetables on the
pavement. This happened to her in the past, also now she pays up without protest. Despite
regular bribing the police she lives under constant fear of eviction by the municipality.
