Answer:

  • Mitochondria possess oxysomes on its inner membrane. These oxysomes take active part in synthesis of ATP molecules.

  • During cellular respiration, ATP molecules are produced and get accumulated in the mitochondria. They play an important role in cellular activities.

  • Only mitochondria can convert pyruvic acid to carbon dioxide and water during cell respiration.

  • Therefore, mitochondria are called 'power house of the cell'.

Mitochondria is the side of ATP synthesis which in turn are responsible for the energy and respiration of the cell. It has oxysomes in its inner membrane which are responsible for ATP synthesis. ATP stands for Adenosine tri-phosphate. It plays a major role in carrying out the cellular activities and without it, the cells wouldn't work as smoothly. Mitochondrion is the only cell organelle which converts pyruvic acid into carbon dipxide and water during respiration. Mitochondria stores the ATP and therefore, stores this Energy, and hence is called the power house of the cell.
