Modern Atomic Theory is based upon Neils Bohr model who developed a new concept of the atom in 1913.

He stated that electrons are positioned in concentric circles around the nucleus. Electrons occupy few orbits surrounding the nucleus and these orbits are known as “stationary” orbits.

Each orbit has its own associated energy.

Energy absorption happens when electrons jump from lower orbit to higher orbit.

Energy emission happens when electrons move from higher orbit to lower orbit.

Energy and frequency of the light that is being radiated or absorbed is calculated by considering the difference in the energy levels of the two orbits.
