Mahatma (Great Soul) Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) stands as one of history’s greatest heroes of “engaged spirituality,” a spirituality that is active within the world to help heal injustice, hatred, pettiness, fear and violence with justice, loving-kindness, equanimity, courage and nonviolence.In India, he is reverently and lovingly named “Bapu” (Father) and is officially honored as “Father of the Nation,” with his birthday on October 2nd commemorated each year as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday. The United Nations General Assembly on June 15 2007 unanimously adopted a resolution declaring October 2 hereafter to be the International Day of Non-Violence, in Gandhi's memory.

M.K Gandhi-the father of nation was one of the greatest legends of India. He was well versed in all aspects of life--political, economical, social, cultural and spirituality.

He was a well educated both in western and Indian philosophy. He was the most important leader of freedom movement. He converted the freedom struggle into a mass movement. His emergence on the political scene of India generated a new spirit and awakening among the masses of India. He lead the organised mass movement against the British and succeeded in liberating India from colonial occupation.

Gandhi was a peace-loving man. Satyagrah (Truthfulness) and Ahimsa (non-violence) were the two important methods of struggle adopted by the Gandhi. Besides Gandhi was a great social reformer. He was against untouchability and worked for the upliftment of untouchables.
