Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on
2 October, 1869 at Porbandar, a small village
in Gujarat. His parents were Karamchand
Gandhi and Putli Bai. He studied law in
England and went to South Africa to practice
as a lawyer. It was that time when the
people of South Africa were treated as slaves
by the British who then ruled the country. So
he decided to work for the welfare of those
people. Later he returned to India and led
freedom struggle against the British. He decided to fight against injustice with the
weapon of truth. He called this Satyagrah. He fought his whole life with the two
weapons of Non-violence and non-cooperation
movement and got freedom for our country. He
led a very simple life and followed the principles
of truthfulness throughout his life. Rabindranath
Tagore gave him the title Mahatma because of his
simplicity, straight forwardness and loyalty
towards the nation. He is regarded as the father of
our nation. Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead by
Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948.
