Mona is 12 years old and her father is 36 years old at present

Solution :

Given , Mona's father is thrice as old as Mona ---(i)

Also given , after 12 years he will be twice old as Mona----(ii)

Lets introduce some variables :

Case -1 :

Let Mona's present age be x ---(a)

According to statement (i) , Mona's father age = 3x ---(b)

So , present age of Mona's father = 3x

After ,12 years , Mona's father's age = 3x+12---(c)

Case -2 :

Mona's age = x + 12

Mona's father's age = 2(x+12) ( since given in statement (ii) that Mona's father is twice age of her

So , Mona's father's age after 12 years is 2(x+12)----(d)

Equations (c) and (d) are same , because the are the ages of Mona's father after 12 years so let's equate them

3x + 12 = 2(x+12)

3x + 12 = 2x + 24

x = 12

Statement (i)=> x = present age of Mona

Present age of Mona = 12 years

Statement (ii)=> present age of Mona's father = 3x

Present age of Mona's father = 3(12) = 36 years
