Bakelite is a condensation polymer that requires two monomers - phenol and formaldehyde.

There are several variables in the method of polymerization, depending on the properties desired. The monomers themselves might be varied; for example using a substituted phenol ( like p-chlorophenol ) , or using acetaldehyde in place of formaldehyde. The intensity of the polymerization can be adjusted to realize a specific number average molecular weight distribution, or to change the level of cross linking.
