This poem is more of a mysterious poem and is considered one of the creepiest poems. What the child hears is a mystery and we keep looking for the answers in the poem, sometimes the reader thinks that maybe the child is a psycho because he used to hear voices and his father used to deny the fact that there is any ghost or any supernatural power, and his fears keep on growing big and big and in search of the answers the child almost went half mad.
The moral of the poem is that when the child is in need and wants to know about the answers he should be told the truth, rather than a lie, because there is chance that child might be scared and maybe go to an extreme in search of the answers, parents are the people which children trust the most.

Sudhalatwal:
Your perspective may be right, but the presence of supernatural of debatable. What answer would you think the father should give the child? Actually, I myself don't believe in the supernatural.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 'Night Voices' highlights the fear of a boy who is scared as he feels someone is whispering in the night, there is someone who is murmuring in the night. His father tries to pacify him saying that it is the moving wind that whispers and waves on the shore that murmur. Still the boy is not convinced and further listens someone laughing in the valley. He also feels his father is staring at door as if waiting for someone. Does he get answer for these from his father? His father seems to be a rational person and explains the child's doubts as natural process. On the contrary, the child has his childlike fears due to which he is not able to get rid of his fears.
Through this poem, the poet wants to show the child-like fears and present the moral that the the children need to believe their parents and trust them. Otherwise we see how the boy's fears keep growing and his fears keep haunting him.
