Today, mobile phones have become extensions of ourselves, so much so that we have forgotten basic etiquette. We have become poor listeners and constantly fiddle with our cellphones when we should be focussed on what others are saying, before we get an opportunity to express our own opinions. But, if we are poor listeners how can we know what to say when it is our turn to speak. With the introduction of smartphones, the situation has worsened. There was earlier no word in the English dictionary to define this behaviour.

In May, 2012, a lexicologist, a phonetician, a debating champion, a poet, several authors and a cruciverbalist met in Sydney University, Australia and, after a lot of discussion, coined a word that has since found a place in the dictionary. The word is phubbing, possibly a cross between phone and snubbing.

In view of the above, we must be extra careful not to speak on our mobile phones or fiddle with them when we are in the midst of people as it is extremely rude to do so. This must be observed especially in schools, colleges, auditoriums, cinema halls, restaurants etc. as it disturbs others, besides reflecting our rudeness.
