A2A: Yes, the field is actually continuous and smooth.

Field lines have two kinds of reality. They exist in a diagram, in which case the lines indicate the direction of the field and their density (spacing) indicates the strength or magnitude of the field.

They can become more real than that in the presence of iron filings. The field is more dense inside a ferrous substance than in air. As filings in a magnetic field tend to arrange themselves into strings, and the strings repel each other, spaces form between strings and the field becomes more concentrated within the strings. So the field lines that are visible in the iron filings really are quantized as almost-distinct lines, but the field only has that striated form in the presence of iron filings (or other ferrous powder).

There are no such thing as field lines. They are as real as topographic lines on a map- they are merely a way to illustrate the strength (by density of lines) of magnetic field, and the direction.

I was very confused about this as a boy. Books not only show field lines without explaining this, I saw images showing solar charged particles coming in and then spiraling around field lines from the Earth’s magnetic field.

But this is wrong. Magnetic fields are a continuous field.

Some people claim that iron filings line up along field lines. But you can test this by placin a magnet below a sheet of paper or plastic, then moving the magnet around. You’ll find the lines realign to point in the direction of the field, but do NOT drag along with the magnet which they would if they were really pinned in field lines.
