Birds build a nest the same way we would build a house. It’s their home. Although not every species of bird goes back to their previous nest, some do. A nest is a mostly protected space for a female bird to lay her eggs, or sometimes a male will build a nest to show off to a female and find a mate. Not all birds build your typical nest in a tree. Some species burrow underground, and some hide in the grass, under dead leaves and such.
Hope it helps
