Most of India's foreign trade is carried through sea routes because -

  • Long Coastline - India has a long coastline that measures about 7,516.6 km along the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean, and the Arabian Sea. Thus, the coastline provides an advantage for India’s international trade.

  • Peninsular India - India is covered by seas and oceans from its three sides and this strategic situation in the Indian ocean facilitates India in connecting with other countries by sea route.

  • Cheapest Means of Transport - Water transport is a cost-effective means of transport. This is because it needs no fixed assets, such as roads or rails to maintain. Also, it provides a smooth surface and so is fuel-efficient.
