let the mother age be x and daughter age be y

x = 4y (i)

x + 5 = 3 (y + 5) (ii)

substitute the value of x in (ii)

4y + 5 = 3y + 15

4y - 3y = 15 - 5

y = 10

therefore,

x = 4y

x = 4×10

x = 40
