Mother Teresa was awarded the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her goodwork. The winner, chosen from among fifty-six nominees, including US PresidentJimmy Carter. She is the sixth woman in the world and the first citizen of India to getthis highly esteemed prize since it was instituted in 1901.Born of Albanian parents in what is now Yugoslavia, Mother Teresa come to Indiafifty years ago. There she taught Geography in a convent school. In 1947, she gave upher teaching career and moved in to the slums of Kolkata to serve God among thepoorest of the poor.
