Mr. Abhimanyu Banerjee is worried about the balance of his monthly budget. The price of petrol has increased by 40%. By what percent should he reduce the consumption of petrol so that he is able to balance his budget?​

Let x be the price of patrol per liter.

And, suppose the initial consumption = 1 liter.

After increasing the price of patrol by 40 %,

New price of patrol per liter = x + 40 % of x

⇒ 7x/5 = 1 liter of patrol

⇒ x = 5/7 liter of patrol

So the final consumption = 5/7 liters.

Hence, the reduction in consumption = Initial consumption - Final consumption

= 1 - 5/.7

= 7 - 5/7

= 2/7

So, The percentage devrease in consumption = the reduction/Initial consumption * 100

= 2/7/1 * 100\

= 200/7 = 25.53 %
