Mr.Grover's age is 36 years and his son's age is 12 years

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

Mr. Grover is three times as old as his son

the sum of their ages is 48

To find:

age of Mr.Grover and his son

Solution:

Let's assume Mr.Grover's age is x years and his son's age is y years

According to the given

Mr.Grover's age (x) is 3times (3) old as his son's age (y)

x= 3y

Forming a linear equation

x-3y=0..........(i)

Now, the sum of their ages (x+y) is given as 48

∴ x+y=48......(ii)

We solve both the linear equations using the elimination method

Subtracting equation (i) from (ii) we get

x + y= 48

x - 3y= 0

(-) (+)   (-)

4y= 48........................(adding the like terms and eliminating x)

∴ 4y =48

∴ y= 48/4

∴ y= 12

Thus, Mr.Grover's son's age is 12 years

So his age will be

x+y=48

∴ x+12=48

∴ x= 48-12

∴ x= 36

Finally, Mr.Grover's age will be 36 years

Hence, Mr.Grover is 36 years old and his son is 12 years old
