Mr.Kumar, while goin to his office first goes 5km towards south to deop his mother at a temple, then he turns and goes 12 km towards east. calculate (1) total distance covered and (2) net displacement of Mr.Kumar?

1) 12 km +5 km =17 km
2) Use pythagoras thm,
        displacement=  root over(5*5 +12*12)

Total distance is 12+5=17 km. This is the DISTANCE he travelled.
But net displacement is the length between starting and ending point. So we know 5 and 12 are Pythagorean triplets with hypotenuse 13 km.
√(12^2+5^2)=13 km.
This is the DISPLACEMENT.
