Mr. Trivedi is an M.L.A. He is a member of legislative assembly.

  • According to the general rules of articles, we use "a" article whenever the next word starts with a consonant and "an" article whenever the next word starts with a vowel.
  • Now, the MLA word starts with a consonant but still we are using "an" article, because the MLA word is an acronym, its starting letter "M" is pronounced such a way (em) that a vowel like sound is orally pronounced at the beginning.
  • Due to this vowel like pronounciation at the beginning, we use the "an" article.
  • On the other hand, we use normal "a" article for the word "member", as here is no vowel like pronounciation at the beginning and the general rule of articles is applied.

Mr. Trivedi is an M.L.A. He is a Member of the Legislative Assembly.

  • An MLA is the short form of a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
  • Before the word ''MLA'', we use ''an'' because it sounds vowel sound ''am-el-a''.
  • Before the word ''Member'' we use ''a'' because it sounds consonant sound.

2) Indefinite article (A/An):
