Mrs. Jack was very proud of her apple tree. One autumn, after harvesting her apples, she called her three sons together. “Here are 150 apples,” she said. “I want you to take them to the market tomorrow and sell them for me.” She gave Morgan 15 apples, Philips 50, and Adam 85. “Your job,” added Mrs. Jack, “is to sell the apples in such a way that each of you brings home the same amount of money.” How do they do it?

[tex][/tex] Mrs.

  1. Morgan sells apples for $42.50 each,
  2. Philips sells apples for $12.75 each,
  3. Adam sells apples for $7.50 each.

LCM of 15, 50 and 85 = 2550

Now dividing 2550 with 15, 50 and 85

  • 2550/15 = 170
  • 2550/50 = 51
  • 2550/85 = 30

To make the prices more reasonable

170/4 = 42.5

51/4 = 12.75

30/4 = 7.5
