The equal width of each piece = 3 \frac{21}{24} inches or 3.875 inches

Given:

Mrs. Shin has a piece of lumber that is 11 5/8 inches wide

She plans to split the width of lumber into 3 equal pieces

To find:

Width of each piece

Solution:

Given width of lumber is 11 5/8 inches convert it into a improper fraction

⇒  11 5/8 inches =  \frac{93}{8} inches

Number of pieces that Mrs. Shin wants split from the lumber = 3

⇒ The length of the each piece = width of lumber ÷ 3

= \frac{\frac{93}{8} }{3} = \frac{93}{8} }(\frac{1}{3} ) = 3 \frac{21}{24} inches or 3.875 inches

The equal width of each piece = 3 \frac{21}{24} inches or 3.875 inches
