The Spanish missions were set up to convert the indigenous people, mainly the native Americans, to Roman Catholic faith. Along with that, the Spaniards wanted to include the new territories under their colonial rule.  


In the process, along with conversion of faith, it helped to integrate these Native Americans into the political and economic fold of colonial Spain.
