multi purpose projects and large dams have come under great scrutiny as;

  1. the flora and fauna of the area around which dams have been created gets affected a lot
  2. the natural flow of the river on which the dam is created gets changed resulting in the deaths and affecting of aquatic life
  3. the villages near to the dams are always under a risk and sometimes gets submerged underwater
  4. construction of dams cause deforestation in a large amount thus affecting the environment.

Hi fellow;

The reasons for which the multi-purpose projects and large dams have come under great scrutiny in the recent years are as follows:

  • The natural flow of rivers is interrupted by multipurpose dams and projects and results in poor sediment flow and excessive sedimentation at the bottom of the reservoir and triggered floods.
  • The rivers are fragmented due to which the aquatic plants are unable to move and fertilize themselves.
  • Artificial reservoirs submerge some parts of the natural vegetation leading to the extinction of Exotic flora and fauna and soil leading to its decomposition over a period of time.
  • They are a reason for the earthquakes which cause water related diseases and environmental and plant pollution.

I hope the answer helped.

Thanks
