Minimum support price is announced by the Government in support of a crop.

Minimum Support Price is a mechanism of intervention through which the Government of India insures that the agricultural producers are safeguarded from any drastic fall in prices. The Government makes the announcement at the onset of the sowing season for few crops which is arrived after taking into the  recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices by the Government of India.

During bumper production years the market price of a particular commodity may fall below the minimum price announced by the Government. In this scenario the Government agencies come forward to buy out the entire produce offered by the farmers at the minimum price announced .

Hope this helps.
