We cannot grow plants without sunlight because sun is the ultimate source of energy to all organisms
All seeds can begin without sunlight because of the energy stored within them. As soon as the first proto-leaves (called cotyledons) are exposed to light, they make chlorophyll which turns then green. Now they can use the process of photosynthesis to make sugar "food" for all the plant's tissues.
