The bricklayer was in the kingdom of fools. What ever he said was interpreted by the fools themselves only. Making such an excuse was totally fine if he made it in such a kingdom however, if he was in someother kingdom his excuse would have been rejected. If we do anything without our mind in it , it is obvious that we'll not be able to neither concentrate or do it right way. Hence highlighting the message that we need to do do the work with our full consciousness.
