My mother was a remarkable woman with a hectic life.
We had many servants, including a cook, but she had her hands full managing the household.
She did some cooking at times. It was of the experimental kind. She would bake cakes and butter
biscuits for us. Once she followed a magazine recipe and made toothpowder ! At another time she
made a new kind of fuel for the boiler, a copper vessel with a water heating system attached to it.
Come summer and she would start rolling out papads at home - which were dried on the terrace. We
children would hop around and try to help her. She never said it was a bother but let us do what we
liked. Mother had several hobbies. One of them was to buy litho prints of gods and human beings.
She would dress them up with bits of cloth, mirrors, beads and sequins. How hideous they days they
were in fashion. Mother was good at both tennis and badminton. She also played golf. She was the
unbeaten local chess champion. She played a good game of bridge as well. At home we loved it
when she joined us for carom or card games. She brought so much life and laughter with her I was
very proud of my mother.

Answer:

  • By the time Richard Ebright was in the second grade, he had collected all twenty-five species of butterflies found around his hometown. According to him, this would probably have been the end to his butterfly collecting. However, a book made him think otherwise. The book titled ‘The Travels of Monarch X’ became a turning point in his life. The book was about how monarch butterflies migrated to Central America. This opened up the world of science to the eager young butterfly collector. At the end of the book, readers were invited to help study butterfly migrations. He actively participated in tagging butterflies to help in the research being conducted by Dr Frederick A. Urquhart. He went on to raise an entire flock of butterflies in the basement of his home. Thus, it can be said that the book had managed to keep his enthusiasm alive by making him aware of the never-ending possibilities in the world of science.
