Well, this is a very interesting question indeed and I think I'll be able to answer this since I've had a couple of courses in high school for astronomy where most of our research was on finding new stars in the sky.

Well, I think you might be aware of the fact that all the stars in the sky do not move, they always stay where they are !

It's infact thus very useful since we with the help of specially programed computers we can always keep a track of the position of each star and their nomenclature is another thing which i don't want to talk for now.

And, so with astronomical telescopes which have accuracy of magnification we keep track of them.

Another interesting fact is that just how we assign numbers to each point in a x-y plane , the scientists have found a way to represent or map each point in the sky to some number in special units.

Hope this helps you !

we can identify starts by many ways

1) starts do not move so any unmovable thing in the sky can be recognized as starts

2)starts twinkle where as other heavenly bodies don't

3) we are living in modern era hence some apps are also there to identify stars such as the night sky app

hope it helps u
