Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was a great novelist and poet, who gave India its national song Vande Mataram, personifying India as a mother goddess to inspire the activists during the Indian Independence Movement. He wrote more than twelve novels, essays and commentaries in Bengali which were widely translated into other regional languages of India as well as in English.
