Bal Gangadhar Tilak was a naturally born leader who believed
in action rather than speech. He proved his points by example and also through
the medium at his disposal. He had to go through lot of trials in his life for
his beliefs. He felt that if his love for his country needed to be tested
through his suffering so be it. He achieved what he set out to do.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak also known as Lokmanya Tilak was born in a middle class Hindu family in Ratnagiri, Maharastra. His father was a scholar in Sanskrit and a well-known teacher. Tilak had the luxury of getting a good education and he was an outstanding student and also excelled in mathematics. He was one of the first of his generation to get a college education. He also did his post-graduation in LLB later.
Tilak got into teaching mathematics after his graduation. He came to realise that the western education system degraded the Indian students and were not at all appreciative of Indian heritage and culture. He decided to start his own educational institution and founded the Deccan Education Society exclusively for Indians to improve their quality of education. This shows to prove that whenever he felt a need for improvement in Society he came forward to do something about it.
After his stint as a teacher he got into journalism and founded two newspapers – Kesari in Marathi and The Mahratta in English. The editorials in the newspapers revealed the sufferings of the people and reported boldly on actual events and asked people to come forth to fight for their rights. They used such language as to evoke a passionate craving for freedom even in a timid person. It was Tilak’s dictum that events that the newspapers reported should be sure of facts and clear as daylight. He really believed in reaching out to even ordinary people like villagers to invoke a feeling of patriotism in them.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak was one of the first to strongly advocate Swaraj for being self-sufficient and to bring a consciousness for freedom in Indians.
My tribute to him for such invaluable contribution to our country which we are enjoying to this day.
