जिन रचनाओं का आनंद मुख्य रूप से सुनकर लिया जाता है वे प्रव्य- काव्य के अन्तर्गत आती है । इस दृष्टि से कविता, कहानी, उपन्यास आदि अव्य-काव्य है । जिन रचनाओं की रचना प्रमुख रूप से घा (आँख) के आधार पर की जाती है और जिनका आनंद देखकर लिया जाता है उन्हें दृश्य-काव्य कहते है। नाटक इसी वर्ग की रचना है, अतः यह दृश्य-काव्य है।
