NaCl has FCC structure and its density 2.18g/cm3. Calculate the distance between the two adjacent atoms in the crystal. Molar mass of NaCl is 58.5g/mol.

Density of unit cell is calculated by -

d = Z.M / NA.a³

a³ = Z.M / NA.d

a³ = (4 × 58.5) / (6.022×10^23 × 2.18)

a³ = 1.78×10^-22

a = 5.63×10^-8 cm

a = 563 pm

Distance between two adjacent atoms of NaCl is given by -

x = a/2

x = 563/2

x = 281.5 pm

Therefore, the distance between the two adjacent atoms in the crystal is 281.5 pm.
