Name a chemical used for dissolving aluminium oxide. In which state of subdivision is the chemical used?

Héroult process alumina, Al2O3, is dissolved in molten cryolite, Na3AlF6 and electrolyzed. For dissolving Aluminium oxide conc. NaOH is used in soln state.
