Explanation:

Cloud Chamber is based on the principle that when a subatomic particle is passed through the supersaturated vapor the particle ionizes the molecules and caused the formation of mist along the track of the particle.

Working:

1. Cloud Chamber consists of an isolated environment with a cold bottom plate and a chamber and a glass plate whose temperature is raised so that the inside of the chamber is filled with vapours.

2. The vapours fall down and as they fall down towards the cold plate it cools down to form a supersaturated environment.

3. The particles are allowed to enter the chamber at the right moment and it is illuminated by an intense beam of light to illuminate the track of the subatomic particles.

4. The particles ionize the gas molecules by knocking out the electrons from their orbit. The ionized gas molecules are polar in nature which causes attraction towards the nearby free charge which causes a misty cloud-like formation.

5. The nature and the characteristics of the trail depend on the type of subatomic particles used for ionization.

6. On application of a strong electric or magnetic to the charged particles alters their path. By analysis of path`s length, thickness, continuity or discontinuity, and the influence of magnetic field (curve). i.e., the e/m ratio can be calculated and particle can be detected.

Cloud Chamber is used for visualizing the path of the subatomic particles and their identification.
