the metal is sodium . it is kept in kerosene because it nature of its highly reactive . if reacts with oxygen in the atmosphere and catches fire. so it is kept in kerosene.

Sodium is highly reactive . So it's kept immersed in kerosene oil to prevent its reaction with oxygen , moisture and carbon dioxide of air to prevent accidental fires .
