Calcium carbonate is strongly heated until it undergoes thermal decomposition to form calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. The calcium oxide (unslaked lime) is dissolved in water to form calcium hydroxide (limewater). Bubbling carbon dioxide through this forms a milky suspension of calcium carbonate.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a product during the thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate which is used by plants to make their food.

• During the thermal decomposition reaction of the calcium carbonate,two products are formed, 1) calcium oxide & 2) carbon dioxide.

CaCO3 + ∆ -----> CaO + CO2

• Now,for the food making process of the plant or for the photosynthesis,the calcium oxide is not necessary.

• But,the carbon dioxide is widely utilised in the photosynthesis of the plants.

• So,the carbon dioxide is the product of the thermal decomposition of the calcium carbonate which is necessary for the plants to make their food.
