Neurons are the structural and functional units of nervous system.

Neuron composed of three major parts namely dendrites, axon and cell body.

There are five types of neurons on the basis of number of axon and dendrites.

Multipolar neuron :

  • They have one axon and two or more dendrites. They are found in the cerebral cortex.

Bipolar neuron :

  • They have one axon and one dendrite, They are found in the retina of the eye.

Unipolar neuron :

  • They have one axon only. They are only found in the embryonic stages.

Pseudo unipolar neuron :

  • They have one axon that branches into two. One of them appears like dendrites.

Apolar neuron :

  • They have no definite dendrons or axons.
