When coal and methane are burnt , CO2 is released.Coal and methane(CH4)mainly contain carbon so burning them specifically gives out CO2.
However burning of coal causes pollution as other acidic gases such as SO2 and NO2 are also released which are considered to be pollutants because on coming in contact with rain, they convert to respective acids (H2SO4 and H3PO4).

The acidis gas formed on burning coal or any natural gas carbon-dioxide is formed when fuel containing carbon is burned in oxygen. According to this following reaction c(s) +o2(g) gives rise to CO2(g)
