Any agent that causes allergic reaction is known as allergen.

Explanation:

Different people are allergic to different substances. Some are allergic to pollen, dusts, molds, certain foods etc.

Pollen serves as an allergen. Hay fever is caused in some people due to pollen.  It causes inflammation and swelling in the lining of the nose and also in eyes (conjunctiva).  It cause sneezing, congestion in breathing and itchy, watery eyes. So people suffer from different allergic reactions.
