To separate insolubleimpurities from salt, you used a process called filtration. The filter paper allowed thesoluble solute (salt) and the solvent (water) to pass through, but it trapped the larger pieces of insolubleimpurities as a residue. The substances that pass through the filter paper are called the filtrate.

Evaporation is great for separating a mixture (solution) of a soluble solid and a solvent. The process involves heating the solution until the solvent evaporates (turns into gas) leaving behind the solid residue
