Normally, the products of a combustion reaction of Hydrocarbon is CO2 and H2O

CH4 + O2 = CO2 + H2O (eqn .not balanced)

But in limited supply of oxygen, partial oxidation takes place and the products are CO and H2 instead of CO2 and H2O

CH4 + O2 = CO + H2 (not balanced)
