The Subsidiary Alliance was introduced by Lord Wellesley, the Governor General of India in 1798.
. Whoever Indian Rulers accepted this alliance have to accept the terms. According to this policy the Indian ruler accepting this alliance have to give a certain portion of their land to keep the British army , have to pay maintenance cost for it, is not allowed to make any alliance with any European and any Indian rulers without the prior permission of the British and in return the British promised to protect the kingdom.Due to this policy Awadh was annexed by the British. Other Indian States who accepted this policy are Mysore, Bhonsle , Scindhiya.
