Mitochondria and chloroplasts are the two organelles that are double-membrane-bound.
Functions of the mitochondria:
(i) They are the sites for cellular respiration.
(ii) They provide energy in the form of ATP for all vital activities of living cells.
Functions of chloroplasts:
(i) They trap solar energy and utilise it for manufacturing food for plants. Hence, they are involved in the process of photosynthesis.

Powerhouse of the cell (Mitochondria)
Mitochondria have two membrane coverings instead of just one. The outer membrane is very porous while the inner membrane is deeply folded. These folds create a large surface area for ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) generating chemical reactions.
FUNCTION:-
- The energy required for various chemical activities needed for life is released by mitochondria in the form of ATP molecules.
- The body uses energy stored in ATP for making new chemical compounds and for mechanical work.
Plastids
The internal organisation of the plastids consists of numerous membrane layers embedded in a material called stroma. Plastids are present only in plant cells.
FUNCTION:-
- There are three types of plastids. They are:-
- Chloroplast:- contains pigment chlorophyll. They are important for photosynthesis in plants.
- Chromoplast:- coloured plastids. They give colour to the flowers and fruits. The bees get attracted by the colour and thus comes to the flower to collect pollen which will lead to pollination.
- Leucoplast:- white or coloured plastids. They are organelles in which materials such as starch, oils&protein granules are stored.
