The four are the bones, which make up most of the mass of the skeletal system; cartilage, which acts mainly as padding; ligaments, which usually connect bones to bones; and tendons, which join muscles to bones. The system has two divisions, the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton.

The main parts of skeleton and its functions:

Skeleton is the structure of our body made up mainly of bones and some cartilages.

Based on location, the skeleton is mainly divided into two parts:

  • Axial skeleton – Axial skeleton is part of the skeleton that comprises of the axis of the skeleton. The bones like cranial bone, facial bones, the vertebral column, the pectoral girdle, and pelvic girdle form axial skeleton. There are a number of 86 bones here.
  • Appendicular skeleton – Appendicular skeleton is formed of bones that form our extremities. The bones like bones of two hands and two legs form the Appendicular skeleton. There are a total of 120 bones here.
