One important beverage crop is tea.
Tea shrubs require hot summers, with temperatures ranging between 21 to 29 degree Celsius. Temperatures higher than required interfere with the process of photosynthesis.
They need abundant rainfall, about 150 to 250cm, most of which they get during the monsoons, especially in areas like Assam. Low rainfall reduces the quality and yield of tea.
The soil needs to be fertile, with sufficient humus. Quite often, fertilizers are added to the soil.
Tea shrubs cannot handle stagnated water. So, the area where the tea is grown needs to be well drained. Natural mountain slopes help in drainage, while in plains, drains need to be dug manually.
